Day 3 – Seamans Hut, drop toilets and egg rolls

Merritts Creek

As we’d had such a big day on Day 2, there was no need to rush when we got up – we’d already done part of what we meant to on Day 3. We took our time having breakfast and packing up again, then headed over Merritts Creek up towards Seamans Hut.

Seamans Hut

Almost at the top of the (deceptively long) hill, on the right is an open area perfect for camping. Plus (in bad weather) its also ok to camp in the hut (there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm). Seaman’s hut was built in 1929 in memory of Laurie Seaman and Evan Hayes who lost their lives in the area in 1928, and also has a plaque dedicated to a group of young snowboarders that went missing in the area.

It was then back along the Main Range track (slightly uphill) towards Rawsons Pass (and more toilets!) before re-joining the Kosciuszko Walk back to the chairlift.

As we had re-joined the same track we’d come up on, it was the perfect time to reflect on our 3 days walking. Hikes like this change you. We’d been to the top of Australia. Hiking in Australia doesn’t get better than that! We’d camped in remote locations, relying simply on the natural beauty of our surroundings to keep us going when it got tough. This hike had challenged me and taken me out of my comfort zone. And I’d loved that! We’d come across some great people. People – just like us – that’d taken time out of their busy/hectic/crazy modern lives to stop for a while, be in the moment, and immerse ourselves in nature and the great outdoors.

Walk back to the chairlift

We were on a high as we headed back to the chairlift. Those heading up to the peak were stopping us – ‘What – you’ve camped for 2 NIGHTS?’. A couple also said that they’d love to do it too. I hope we inspired them to make it happen.

Final treat with the views

At the bottom of the chairlift I was super happy to find that the café (with officially the best deluxe egg rolls in Australia) was open. Egg roll/good coffee/softdrink = perfect combo! Then onto the shower…and clean clothes!

Total Distance (and trail details): Mount Stillwell to Thredbo. Approx 9km

Highlights: The egg roll – and shower!

Lowlights: That it was over.
