Gone are the days of putting on your thick brown woollen socks, your sensible khaki shorts (or zip off pants), plaid shirt, stiff leather boots, and heading out for a hike.  Blokey blokes with a thick beard (or particularly adventurous women), a walking pole made from a stick found in the bush, and above average fitness levels.

The need breed of hiker is someone from all walks of life, all ages, and many fitness levels. They are men, women, kids – and whole families.  The modern hiker are simply those people that love to get out and explore, have adventures, and seek out new trails. Those trails can be short and flat, or tough and mountainous – and everything in between.

The modern hiker usually loves camping (and will walk all day seeking out the ultimate secluded camping spot), but doesn’t want to go without certain comforts.  But they are also happy to carry only a day pack and have their bags transported to the next comfortable lodgings. They care about being comfortable in their clothing, and make sure it’s suited for the purpose, but wont compromise on looking good. They care about the environment, and want to make sure the pristine places they visit stay that way for generations to come.

They Heart Hiking, and will shout it from the mountaintops – because that’s where they’d rather be, and will spend all their time, money and energy planning the next trip.

What about you – are you a modern hiker?  What else would you add to this list?
