STOP. This is what I did when I realised I hadn’t done that for a while
Last Friday I did a training walk at the You Yangs. Another person that came along had never been there before. She’d meant to get there for a while, but ‘things’ had got in the way.
As soon as she stepped out of the car she exclaimed something like ‘This is beautiful’ ‘What a great day!’, and this excitement continued throughout our walk. Comments such as ‘I can see why you love coming here’ and ‘We really do need to make time for ourselves to do things like this’ were in abundance as we walked the East-West track. And the big grin on her face in the photos was priceless.
I was so happy that I’d been the one to finally get her out there, and to show her one of my favourite tracks at the You Yangs.
Her excitement highlighted that I’ve become a bit jaded with some of my hiking.
- YES, I realise how beautiful it is.
- YES, I realise how lucky I am to have this on my doorstep.
BUT, sometimes I’m so focussed on how many kilometres I’m walking (and how fast), and what I need to do as soon as I get back home, that I don’t take the time to stop and stare at the magnificence before me.
What did I do? Saturday I got up early, dressed warm (it was 2 degrees!) and headed to Bells Beach. I walked along the beach, went to South Side and walked along there too.
- How far did I go?
- How fast did I walk?
I don’t know.
BUT I did take the time to stop and take it in. To relish the moment. To look wistfully out to the ocean, and realise my place in this world. To be thankful that I’m strong and healthy enough to walk along the sand, and up the stairs. I took deep breaths of fresh, salty, air. And I vowed to be thankful each and every time I go out for a walk or a hike from now on.
So, if you (like me), haven’t stopped lately to truly enjoy where you are, to be thankful for what you have in front of you – DO IT. You won’t regret it for one second.
